Go set a watchman sequel6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() unless another surprise for readers lies somewhere in her files, this publication intensifies the regret that Harper Lee published so little. Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller, richer understanding and appreciation of the late Harper Lee. Regardless of whether the new book is regarded as Mockingbird 2 or Mockingbird 1.0, it is, in most respects, a new work, and a pleasure, revelation and genuine literary event. This book is about Scout returning to her home town as an adult, years after the trial. ![]() It turns out he has flaws, blind-spots, and errors in thinking. The real reason peope hated Go Set A Watchman is that Atticus turned out to not be the ideal and perfect man everyone idolized him as. The publishers decided theyd rather hear Scouts story from her childhood perspective so TKaM was written. Go Set a Watchman is merely a coming of age story with little historical or social import. ![]() While there can be no doubt that the editorial attention given to Mockingbird made the narrative more gripping – the new publication has no equivalent climax to the courtroom drama of the Robinson trial – it can also be accused of having liberally (in two senses) sanitised the contents. The announcement that the author will publish a new novel is thrilling to fansbut also contradicts what the author has long said she wants. It sounds interesting - its the sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, but it was apparently written first from what I heard. The shift in Atticus's attitudes proves to be nuanced and rooted in the deep political complexities of the south – which New York editors may reasonably have thought too obscure for a broader audience – but their excision significantly altered the story. Mark Lawson wrote in a review for The Guardian that Watchman is more complex than Mockingbird (though he also feels it is less compelling): ![]()
